PATELA CARE FOUNDATION COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL CHILDHOOD CANCER DAY 2025 ON PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY WARDS UCH IBADAN NIGERIA

Childhood cancer accounts for about 2% of all cancer cases worldwide. The incidence of childhood cancer varies by geographic region, with the highest rates reported in developed countries.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) for childhood cancer is 140.6 per million in developed countries, compared to 82.5 per million in developing countries.

In Suh-Saharan African countries such as Nigeria, Childhood Cancer is a pressing Public health concern that requires continuous attention. In HICs, despite higher incidence, the cure rates are over 80% whereas in LICs, cure rates are approximately 30%.

These disparities are due to several challenges such as poor awareness of childhood cancer, religious and cultural beliefs, inadequate diagnostic and treatment facilities, financial toxicity, inadequate insurance health schemes, treatment abandonment by fatigued care givers, poor psycho social oncological services and support, leading to under-diagnosis, under-treatment and poor clinical outcome of childhood cancers.

The International Childhood Cancer Day commemorated every year on the 15th of February is a global collaboration campaign created to raise awareness promote advocacy, raise funds, improve childhood cancers health policies by engaging key opinion stakeholders; and much more, honor the courage and resilience of children and family care givers dealing with cancer diagnosis.

Patela Care Foundation since inception has been committed to this global collaborative campaign by promoting childhood cancer awareness through media programs, awareness talks and walks, and providing financial and psychosocial support.

In its usual custom, Patela Care Foundation again this year provided chemotherapy drugs, pharmaceutical items and light bites for children receiving care at the Pediatric Oncology wards, University College Hospital UCH Ibadan.

Patela Care Foundation Team was received by the HOD of Paediatric Department, Prof Brown, ably represented by Dr Fashina, Head of Nursing Pediatrics , DDN Popoola , DDN Oki, and the oncology team and family care givers.
